The EmC process is a structured way of building emotional intelligence in leaders, helping them to be more emotionally attuned, so that they can create psychological safety and build engagement thereby also boosting productivity.
The online EmC Master Class is taught by the founder of EmC Leaders, Dr. Lola Gershfeld, an organizational psychologist and a corporate emotional connection expert.
Dr. Gershfeld is the original developer of the Emotional Connection process (EmC) and the author of two books, Emotional Connection and The Connected Culture. About EmC
Research in attachment and neuroscience highlights that humans are wired for connection, especially those who depend on each other. When the connection is broken, the brain experiences "separation distress," causing individuals to become anxious or avoidant. In response to the disconnection,
Team members want the connection, but they use ineffective strategies that fuel the disconnect and result in anxious and avoidant behaviours. Teams get stuck in a perpetual negative cycle, creating an unsafe environment and a toxic work environment.
Research shows that increased anxious/avoidant behaviours lead to workplace conflict, disengagement, and higher turnover intentions.
The Emotional Connection (EmC) process is designed to restructure the negative cycle of conflict by repairing the connection, thus reducing avoidant and anxious behaviours.
Based on the last 50 years of attachment theory and the science of emotional connection, the EmC provides a clear roadmap to repair and heal relationship injuries that cause anxious and avoidant behaviours. With a more secure bond in the relationship, leaders and team members learn how to create psychological safety in the relationship, which calms the nervous system and lessens the reaction of anxious and avoidant responses.
3 stages of EmC
The EmC process is comprised of three stages and nine steps. Each step enhances the components of emotional intelligence, including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship awareness:
1. De-escalation Stage:
✔️ Team members learn about attachment, how they impact each other, and what they need to regain their emotional balance.
✔️ Each participant becomes aware of their raw spots, emotions, automatic thoughts, and protective behaviours, recognizing steps in their negative cycle.
2. Restructuring Stage:
✔️ As team members start to create more safety, they start to restructure their interactions by being more accessible, responsive, and engaged.
✔️ Using the Slow-Motion Camera, Six Responses, and the EmC Reconnection Form, participants experience moments of connection and repair.
✔️ With bonding conversations, team members start to feel more secure in their relationship.
3. Integration Stage:
✔️ As team members integrate the EmC process into their daily interactions, their response to stressors starts to shift, creating a nurturing ground for trust, resilience, and growth.
