Work Relationships: Understanding the Negative Cycle

A Leadership Masterclass

We all get caught up in negative cycles in our relationships at work (and home!) It could be the tone of voice used, or something that was said, or even a particular look – and we’re triggered. Straight into a reaction we’re barely aware of. And before you know it we’re irritated and annoyed and frustrated – or left feeling confused and bewildered as to what just happened. Relationships can be hard!

And yet they matter so much. When we feel like an important work relationship is on shaky ground, it causes stress and distress, and our work performance suffers. As a leader it is your job to create a sense of psychological safety for your team. This in turn boosts team and individual engagement, which then motivates and improves performance. But how do you manage all those ‘people issues’?! The conflict, the ‘not-quite-conflict’, the ‘not-getting-on’ness, the bad feeling that can quickly escalate to toxicity.
